Printmaking is a great way to introduce your child to a very old art form and it's fun!1. Choose a material to carve a design into. If your kids are young, start them off with sponges and erasers that don? need to be cut.
2. Start by having them dip the sponge or eraser into paint and stamp out images on glossy paper.
3. Have them explore what happens when the object is pulled away from the paint. Interesting types of designs will appear based on the amount of paint used, e.g., less paint will leave a more defined image than a big glob of paint.
4. When your child is old enough to carve designs into a potato or a bar of soap, have them think about the need to create the image in reverse so when printed it turns out facing the right way.
5. Have kids try different patterns and explore how varying the spacing out of the print stamps changes the final design.
6. If your child loves print making, they can advance on to linoleum where they can sketch out an entire picture that can then be inked and printed.
7. Research printmaking at your local library or on the web to find new tools and new ideas from this historic art form.
