Belly Button Piercing

Middle School Expert Advice from Connie Collins

Q: My 13-year-old daughter thinks it would be cool to get her belly button pierced because her 15-year-old cousin did. I am definitely against having it done and I will not allow it, but I would like some more reasons to explain why she shouldn't have it done.

A: Since your daughter in only 13, keep is mind as you talk to her that saying no is all you really need to say. In your discussion with her, you can give reasons, but don't get drawn into arguing about the pros and cons of piercing.

Piercing of the navel is as dangerous as piercing next to the eye. It's risky behavior because:

  • Needles used to pierce spread infections.
  • Piercing guns cannot be sterilized unless they have a removable needle.
  • A hole in the navel can be an open pathway into the abdominal cavity for infection.
  • The ring catches constantly on clothing.
  • Wearing open-midriff tops is forbidden by nearly every middle school.

When your daughter is 18, she can choose to pierce her navel because she can then deal with any problems that might arise.
