Warm-Up
Read Golden Bear or another book, and talk about the colors in the book. Encourage children to name each color.

Procedure

  • Announce that the group is going to make books about colors.
  • Give each child one of the books you prepared. Place crayons on the table, one color at a time, asking children to name the colors. Explain that you have written "I Like Colors" on the cover.
  • Invite children to draw a shape in a different color on each page. Help them do one page and one color at a time. Write the name of the color under each shape. Repeat the process with each color.
Enrichment
When books are complete, offer to write "by (the name of the child)" on the front cover of each book. Invite children to write or scribble their own names as author, if they wish. Encourage them to share their book with one another at circle or reading time.

Observation Assessment

  • Proficient - Child understands the concept of creating a book and the concept of a page.
  • In Process - Child needs substantial help to understand the concept of creating a book, and has difficulty understanding the concept of a page.
  • Not Yet Ready - Child does not yet understand the concept of creating a book or the concept of a page.
