The Sandy Bottom Orchestra: Letters to a Friend
Letters By Young Authors
Dear Phoebe,
I hope you have time to read this last letter because I'll be busy playing my violin in the orchestra at Interlochen. Yesterday we had the big 4th of July concert. Dad conducted; can you believe it? Mom is still trying desperately to quit smoking though you would never know by the way she played the piano yesterday. Carol watched with her Mom and Dad while Scott and I played in the orchestra. Scott plays the cello. I'm learning to accept my family for the way they are and I guess my family's not so weird after all.
Love,
Rachel
Letters By Parent Authors
Dear Phoebe,
Mom ended up playing Mozart during the 4th of July concert and the conductor held her hand all the way home. I went out on my first date with a cello player named Scott. The only time I felt the least bit Italian was when he kissed me goodnight with the top down of his convertible at the drive-in movies under a blanket of stars. It looks like I'll be heading off to school at Interlochen next year. I'm ready for a new adventure and to be with kids who share my interest in music. Carol and I will always be friends. I'm really proud of her softball talent and she appreciates my music. I'm writing this from my own Italian garden next to the fountain that reminds me of my summer in Florence.
Love,
Rachel
