Summer Catch-Up

Elementary School Expert Advice from Barbara Potts

Question: My son's second-grade teacher recommends he go to summer school to improve his reading. He reads slowly, pauses between words, and doesn't always pause where he is supposed to. Can you recommend a resource that could help him with his reading? What is your opinion of the program "Hooked on Phonics"?

Answer: Check with your son's teacher and the technology specialist at his school to find some software titles that would be helpful to your son. You may also want to look for children's books that have companion cassette tapes; your son could read the book along with the tape and get the phrasing and speed, and then read by himself without the tape.

Many programs, such as Hooked on Phonics, can help children with their reading, especially if used regularly. They tend to be very expensive, and you may be able to find similar materials in a teacher's supply store or a bookstore in your community.
