Pencil Grip

Elementary School Expert Advice from Barbara Potts

Question: Is it too late to have my ten-year-old son change the way he holds a pencil? His writing is only legible when he writes slower.

Answer: It will be difficult to help your son change his pencil grip at age ten, but it can be done. You will probably want to enlist the help of an occupational therapist who can suggest exercises that will help your son strengthen those muscles. A therapist can also help him find the best grip, and can suggest appropriate rubber pencil grips or other tools to help.

An occupational therapist can also help determine if it is actually your son's grip or something else that is affecting his handwriting. Your pediatrician can refer you to a therapist in your community if you need help with this.
