Asking a Teacher for Help

Middle School Expert Advice from Judith Lee Ladd

Question: My son is falling behind in math because he doesn't like his teacher. The teacher says he asks too many questions. I'm worried that he won't score well enough on the TAAS test to qualify for algebra next year. What should I do?

Answer: If you son does not feel he can ask questions in the manner that best facilitates his learning, help him find a comfortable way to talk to the teacher. He may need to write her a note to explain what makes him feel more comfortable in his learning. If necessary, you may need to schedule an appointment with the teacher and your son, so that private time can be devoted to listening to each other. The teacher may have far more knowledge than you are aware of. A meeting will give you the confidence to know what she is doing, or give you the clarity of vision to take your concerns to the principal.
