Q
My son is a sophomore in high school and wants to become a manager of athletes, like "Jerry McGuire." What courses in college will prepare him for this career?
A
Your son should focus on sports marketing courses and on experiences that will build his management skills. Many sports agents have a legal or business background, but your son can start to learn business theory by taking courses in sports management or management in general. What will be equally as helpful is actually playing a leadership role in sports by coaching or working in the athletic department. The more experiences he has during college, the better. It will be worth it for him to do this even if he doesn't get paid. Good luck -- it sounds like a challenging and interesting career!
