Workshops for Parents of High-School Students

Here are some parent workshop ideas and some advice for the parents of high-school students. Learn how to find training in college prep, financial aid, at-home motivation, reading, and more.
Q
I work with low-income high school students in an urban setting. I want to find training or workshops in college prep, financial aid, at-home motivation, reading, and more for their parents. Do you have any suggestions?
A
Having trainings and workshops for parents is such a good idea -- it involves parents in their children's lives during such a stressful time and helps them assist their children. If you are able, my advice is to call the local high schools in the area and gather information about everything you want them to learn. Financial-aid programs, in particular, will have a lot of useful information. See if the schools already have programs, and if not, inquire about setting one up yourself. See if the students and their parents would be willing to help. Send out flyers with these students to find out what type of reception your programs will have in your community. Although it may take a little bit of time to put together, this is definitely worthwhile and will be appreciated by both the students and their parents.
