Pictures Instead of Words Activity for Kids

Rebus-Making

Materials

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Colored pens
Directions

You can create a letter or story using pictures and symbols instead of words. This is called a REBUS.

Here are some examples:

  • instead of "I," draw an eye
  • instead of "can," draw a watering can
  • instead of "love," draw a heart
  • instead of "be," draw a bee
Now try it on your own. Color your pictures and show it to a friend or parent to decipher.

Note: Rebus comes from a Latin word meaning "things." In the old days, signs and posters advertising carnivals were painted with pictures and no words to show people what "things" were going on.
