How to Create a Summer Learning Experience

by Jerome J. Schultz, Ph.D.

You can create a summer experience for your child that's fun and educational.

Setting Expectations
Celebrating Accomplishments
Maintaining What has Been Learned
Continue the Learning Process
Involving Allies

Summer is a time when all kids need to take a break from the demands of school and just have fun. However, for many kids with learning disabilities, the summer can be an educational "black hole" when they lose a lot of what they learn during the year. In terms of learning efficiency and learning need, these are "12-month kids" in a 9-month culture. In order to be successful, these kids need learning to be continuous. For this reason, it's important for parents and teachers to work together to build a bridge that spans the end of one school year and the beginning of the next.
