Private or Public School

Elementary School Expert Advice from Barbara Potts

Question: Are private schools better for kids with disabilities?

Answer: Private schools are not necessarily better for children with learning differences. However, small class sizes and more individual attention do help children with learning differences, and those can more often be found in private schools. There are many private schools that specialize in helping such children, with staff members who are specially trained to help them.

Go to visit whatever schools you are considering. Take the usual tour, but also plan to spend several hours there. Sit in on the classes your child would take and watch the interactions between students as well as between students and teachers. Ask about the class sizes and support services that are available for students.

If you're not already involved, find out if there is a group for parents of children with disabilities in your area. Talk with parents there about school experiences and their recommendations.
