Five Steps for Parents

by Ellen Goldberg

Children with learning disabilities (LD) have to give it their all to be successful — and they need their parents to be supportive and patient, and to advocate on their behalf. Here are five important things you can do:

  • Recognize, accept, and understand your child's LD.

  • Find your child's strengths.

  • Find ways to support your child's disability.

  • Encourage unique special interests.

  • Don't feel guilty if you can't always work with your child — just get the right help.
