LD and College Admissions

College/Career Expert Advice from Carol Carter

Question: Is it best to tell a state college or university that I have a learning disability? How would it affect my chances of getting in?

Answer: I honestly don't know how admissions officers see that, so I am not sure that I would bring it up except in an in-person interview or an essay. It shows that you are self-aware and willing to work to overcome obstacles. Many of the most successful people in business also had learning disabilities. Be ready to discuss other ways in which you have overcome hardships or difficulty so that the selection committee doesn't feel that you are relying solely on this as your proof of being well-rounded in overcoming adversity.
