What's a Cover School?

Homeschooling Expert Advice from Isabel Shaw

Question: How do cover schools work? I live in Alabama and need to find a cover school.

Answer: It appears that the term "cover school" is open to very broad interpretation in the Alabama State Education Code. Cover schools are church schools composed basically of homeschoolers. This applies whether the school covers one family or many. Your individual faith or religious beliefs determine the type of cover school you attend or create. Due to the separation of church and state, these church schools are not regulated, and all faiths and beliefs are guaranteed the right to homeschool and establish a cover school.

For a very thorough explanation of how these cover schools operate, visit the Alabama Homeschool Organization's question and answer page at www.alabamahomeschooling.org/helps.html. Good luck!
