Using a hot-air balloon, Frenchman Jean Pierre Blanchard flies between Philadelphia and Woodbury, New Jersey.

1788: Connecticut becomes the fifth state in the United States.
1936: The U.S. Army adopts the semiautomatic rifle.
1951: The United Nations headquarters opens in New York City.
1972: In Hong Kong harbor, a fire breaks out aboard the Queen Elizabeth, and by the next morning the famous vessel lies in a wreck on the bottom of the sea floor.
