Teacher Anne Sullivan, using the "hand alphabet" and water from a pump, teaches the word "water" to deaf and blind Helen Keller. This breakthrough starts the pair on their remarkable and inspiring joint career.

1792: George Washington employs the president's constitutional power to veto a bill for the first time.
