Gifted Homeschooler Hates Math

Gifted and Talented Expert Advice from Noreen H. Joslyn, LISW, ACSW

Question: I am homeschooling my nine-year-old son after much frustration with public school. He scored very high in his testing, and at many levels. My problem is that although he absorbs massive materials, he has an aversion to math. I am looking for good materials to help him become more interested. Any thoughts?

Answer: There must be a lot of parents out there with some good math teaching ideas for you. I know of two great books -- Baseball Math and Football Math -- that present concepts in a fun, sports-minded way. Also, building activities -- like model building -- might catch his interest and will be great for working with math concepts. You can also try Math Baseball and more FunBrain.com math games here on Family Education Network.
