Centralized School Curriculum

Education Expert Advice from Barbara Callaghan

Question: What is your opinion on a centralized curriculum by either the state or the district?

Answer: I wholeheartedly support a centralized curriculum within a school district, but not at the state level. At the state level, I believe proficiency standards are more appropriate.

A school district should have a curriculum developed for every subject that takes children from kindergarten through high school. The school board, parents, students, and teachers should all be able to look at each curriculum area and see what the expectations are. From a practical standpoint, budgets are more easily prepared and more cost effective. Since the school board only needs to learn about one curriculum, teacher training can be provided more efficiently. It is also easier to adopt new programs, and accountability is more easily controlled.
