PSAT/NMSQT

This test has two purposes. First, it acts as a preparatory test for the SAT. The format and time allotted for each section are similar to those on the SAT I. The second function of this exam is to serve as a qualifying test for National Merit Scholarships. The top scores on this test qualify students to submit a National Merit Scholarship application. The PSAT is scored on a percentile basis. That is, scoring in the 89th percentile means that 89 percent of all scores were below the student's score.

In taking this test, students can qualify for a very prestigious scholarship, so some students gear up for this test by taking a PSAT preparation course. Various preparation books have been written for this test and are available in most major bookstores and libraries. Taking the PSAT in the sophomore year in order to practice for the student's PSAT in the junior year is another strategy used to increase a student's chances of qualifying for a National Merit Scholarship. This strategy is also advisable because taking the PSAT multiple times prepares students for the all important SAT. Also, receiving a National Merit Scholarship looks fantastic on an application and can be financially rewarding.
