Homeschooling a Serious Athlete

College/Career Expert Advice from Carol Carter

Question: My 13-year-old daughter is a very serious figure skater. She wants to be homeschooled so she can focus on her skating. What are the pros and cons? How would it affect her chances of getting into college?

Answer: How do you feel about homeschooling? Homeschooling is only a good idea if the parent is completely committed to this responsibility. Even then, students may miss out on some important emotional and social development. I would advise you to encourage her to pursue her sport and her studies. For any athlete, education is what stays as a strong foundation long after the skating days are over. It is important to encourage kids to see choices for the long term.
