High GPA Is Only One Factor in College Admissions

College/Career Expert Advice from Carol Carter

Question: Does it help to have an honors diploma when applying to college? I'm wondering if all my hard work in the honors program will really benefit me.

Answer: If you have a high GPA at the expense of leadership activities or part-time work, you may not be in a strong position with the college of your choice. Seek balance in what you do. It's not worthwhile to stay in the honors program if that means you can't grow in other areas of your life -- socially, emotionally, physically. Ask yourself if you can learn to use your mind to your fullest while still developing all aspects of yourself.
