Poor Test Scores and College Admission

College/Career Expert Advice from Carol Carter

Question: Our daughter wants to attend a four-year college, but has a 3.3 GPA and a 900 SAT test score. She is very talented in the arts, but because of her test score she feels discouraged and unworthy. I want to encourage her to apply, but am not sure if it would be a waste of time.

Answer: There are some schools which weigh activities and other life experiences as much as, if not more than, ACTs and SATs. Schools care that your child has the academic ability to persist in the face of challenging work. If she can demonstrate this, the schools may be inclined to take a risk on her because she shows the perseverance that college level work requires.
