Getting into Veterinary School

College/Career Expert Advice from Del Antaki

Question: My daughter is a high-school junior and wants to be a veterinarian. I've heard that veterinary school is almost as competitive as medical school and her grades aren't great. What can she do to improve her chances of getting in?

Answer: There are a number of avenues your daughter can pursue. Veterinary school is but one of these options. Some of the other options that my students have explored are equine management, animal science, and specialized animal training programs. I had a student who spent a summer at Sea World as an intern in their introductory program to learn if she truly wanted to be a marine trainer.

The options to work with animals are varied and require varying levels of education. I encourage your daughter to think seriously about what type of work she wants to do. If she does decide on veterinary school, then it is very important that she be an excellent student as the field is very competitive. I wish her luck with her exploration.
