The World of One
by Ann SvensenTwo major developmental feats are part of a one year old's world: walking and the beginnings of speech. As you've probably noticed, one year olds enjoy exploring themselves, and experimenting with what they can do. They also put just about everything they get their hands on in their mouths. Have some fun with your one year old by trying these activities.
Copy cat
One activity that's sure to please is imitation. These simple moments of play help improve coordination, muscle tone, and strength.
What you need: Just you and your one year old.
The activity: Pat your head, rub your tummy, or raise your arms over your head and drop them to your sides. You will both enjoy this simple game. Then try imitating your child's movements; it'll make both of you giggle.
Pudding painting
You've probably noticed that your one year old puts just about everything in her mouth. Instead of worrying whether or not she's eating the finger paints, why not give her pudding to paint with?
What you need: A plate with some different colored puddings on it.
The activity: Put the plate of pudding on your one year old's high chair tray and let her make a beautiful mess right on the surface. She will have great fun with the colors and the textures of the pudding. Of course, you should be prepared to give her a bath afterwards.
