Northern Right Whale Migrations in April
By April, most of the Atlantic northern rights are gathering off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. And scientists at the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary are busy logging in each new whale they see. The northern right population is so small that scientists actually recognize individuals from year to year and give them pet names. They use dart guns to extract blubber samples to analyze. Biopsy darting provides important information about chemical pollution levels in the ocean and the health of the whales. But don't worry -- it doesn't hurt our whale friends!
