Northern Right Whale Migrations: Swimming North
As the right whales swim north, they're traveling pretty slowly -- about 4 miles per hour. And there are dangers along the way. Whale hunting is no longer allowed, so the major cause of death for the right whale these days is collisions with ships and entanglement in fishing gear. The whale's habit of resting and playing at the surface of the water is what makes it particularly susceptible to ship collisions. Scientists call a group of whales playing at the surface a SAG, or surface active group.
