Northern Right Whale Migrations in Winter

Some northern right whales winter a bit farther north than Florida. They hang out near Gray's Reef Marine Sanctuary off the coast of Georgia. There scientists observe calving and study the nation's most endangered large whale species. There used to be several thousand right whales in the Atlantic and Pacific, but commercial whaling has reduced the population to 500. Only 295 are left in the Atlantic and just 200 in the North Pacific Ocean.

Right whales float when dead. This, combined with their commercially valuable products, such as oil and baleen, and their slow swimming speed, made them the "right" whales to hunt for many years.
